Die Spitfire wurde von der britischen Vickers-Supermarin-Designerin Michelle auf Basis des Rennflugzeugs der S-Serie und in Übereinstimmung mit den taktischen und technischen Anforderungen der britischen Luftwaffe vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg entworfen. Bekannt als „Tigerpanzer eines Kämpfers“. Insgesamt wurden etwa 22.907 Spitfires verschiedener Typen hergestellt und Mitte der 1950er Jahre praktisch ausgemustert.
