Die B-29 ist eine viermotorige Doppelleitwerkskonfiguration mit Hochflügelanordnung, einer Länge von über 30 Metern, einer Flügelspannweite von über 43 Metern und einem maximalen Startgewicht von rund 60 Tonnen. Seine Höchstgeschwindigkeit könnte über 600 Kilometer pro Stunde erreichen, mit einer Reichweite, die den gesamten Globus abdeckt.
Als Hauptbomber der US-Luftwaffe während des Zweiten Weltkriegs war sie am 6. August 1945 die erste kleine Atombombe der Geschichte. Darüber hinaus wurde die B-29 häufig bei anderen Militäreinsätzen eingesetzt, darunter im Koreakrieg und im Vietnamkrieg , und mehr.
Die Atombombe „Little Boy“ erhielt den Spitznamen „Enola Gay“ und wird aufgrund ihrer Rolle bei der Veränderung der modernen Kriegsführung oft als „Teufelsschiff“ bezeichnet.
Die B-29 spielte nicht nur eine entscheidende Rolle in der Kriegsführung, sondern wurde auch zum Pionier der modernen Zivilluftfahrt. Beispielsweise baute Boeing in den frühen 1950er Jahren den B-29-Bomber zu zivilen Verkehrsflugzeugen um und führte das berühmte Flugzeug „Stratocruiser“ ein, das auf Langstreckenflügen zwischen den USA und Europa weit verbreitet war.
