The B-17 bomber (English: B-17 Bomber) is a propeller-engined bomber developed by the Boeing Company for the U.S. Army Air Force in the 1930s.
The B-17 bomber is the world's first four-engine bomber with an all-metal fuselage. It adopts the conventional aerodynamic layout of the lower single wing, a constant-speed propeller engine, a bomb load of 2 tons, a range of 2,980 kilometers, and a speed of 322 to 402 thousand per hour. Meters, 4 to 6 crew members. Compared with other bombers at the time, the aircraft was larger, faster, and had a long range.
As the main strategic bomber of the U.S. military in the early days of World War II, the initial model Y1B-17 was delivered in August 1937. In August 1944, the United States Army Air Force (USAAF) had at least 33 B-17 bomber groups deployed overseas. Subsequent B-17E, B-17F and B-17G models have been improved successively. Among them, the B-17F model produced 3405 aircraft and the B-17G model produced 8,680 aircraft. By April 1945, a total of 12,731 B-17 bombers of various types had been produced. In World War II, the bombing volume of various types of B-17 bombers accounted for 40% of the total bombs dropped by the US military, which was as high as 640,000 tons.
